I love writing. Writing is in my blood. I've been writing for as long as I can remember, and I'm going to keep writing for as long as I live. And I'm going to blog about it, too.
I… uh… haven’t gotten much outlining done. I have the first seventeen chapters done and I don’t think I’ve even opened the Word document in two days. It’s July 6th and we’re leaving in nine days, so I’m not sure if I’ll get it done or not. I’m being extremely lazy, which is a huge problem for me. And also right now I’m running on three hours of sleep which, if you know me at all, means that I’m not going to get anything done today. I am absolutely useless when sleep deprived.
I’ve made some changes to this blog though, sort of like I was doing to one of my other ones a few weeks ago. I changed the shade of purple you see and it’s driving me nuts that I can’t make the post titles purple too but I don’t know how. :( Also, if you roll over one of the posts, it turns white, which is pretty. :P
I haven’t done any outlining in three days, so I decided to make a goal for myself.
GOAL: Finish outlining my untitled original novel by July 15th. I’ll be leaving for a week that day. That gives me almost three weeks to outline fifteen or sixteen chapters, which won’t be too hard. A chapter a day, and I’ll probably do two or three. Then I’ll start writing it before/on the trip, and life will be good yayyy! :D
My outlining is going pretty good. Today I outlined four chapters, so I now have the first nine chapters of my original novel outlined. I already know it’s gonna help me a lot. What I’m basically doing is summarizing each chapter in about twenty or thirty words, then breaking each chapter into three scenes and summarizing them in about seventy-five to a hundred words. It really works for me because I’m not being too vague but I’m not being too detailed, either. I’m really looking forward to actually getting around to writing this thing now.
You can read more about my outlining style here, but I’m not doing exactly the same thing. I’m not breaking the scenes into the different parts like it says to do in that article, because then my outlines would end up being too detailed and I’d feel like, after spending that much work on them, I couldn’t change them at all. So I tweaked it a little bit, so now my way of outlining gives me this:
Hi everybody! My name’s Meaghan, I’m 15, and I’m a writer.
I love writing, and as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to grow up to be a writer. I want to be published. I want to be successful. I want my books to be read in schools. I want my books to be on best seller lists. I want my books to be on display in book stores. But most of all, I just want to write.
I am currently in the process of outlining (or plotting, whichever you’d like to call it) an as-of-yet untitled original novel and a fic for the Outsiders fandom, currently titled Nightmares Can Be Deadly. I’ll post here every so often to let you know how that’s going. :)
Take care!
~Meaghan
